Goosebumps. Ghouls. Ghosts. Halloween night is time to be scared out of our wits, but with all the fun in the world. It can be said that it is probably the only time in which people honor the unforeseen, or the undead – creatures and paranormal beings walking to and fro, and probably even everywhere. Some do not believe in such “stupid” things, while others speculate that our thoughts are the only things scaring us after all. Regardless of what people believe, Halloween is also a time for trick or treating, being creating with the scariest costumes, and designing homes in the most frightening way possible.

A Halloween night would not be perfect without pumpkins and candles to complete the interior design of an old, spooky haunted house, or a dimly-lit graveyard or garden. The first thing that comes to mind are pumpkins – bright, orange red, mean looking pumpkins. Also known as Jack-o-lanterns, these objects originated when some would notice odd-looking lights glowing in foggy swamps during nighttime. Later, as it turned out, the strange glow came from gasses emitted by the marshlands. Nevertheless, this unusual phenomenon came to be associated with Halloween, and people later began calling the lights “friar” lanterns, and used pumpkins to represent these lights during Halloween night. In 1820, when Washington Irving wrote the famous novel, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, in which a headless horseman would charge his victims, carrying a red-glowing jack-o-lantern, the pumpkin remained a staple and traditional Halloween object.

One of the most effective candles to use when lighting pumpkins are Votive candles, because they burn longer, they have brighter flickers, and their candleholders ensures its stability. On the other hand, placing glow sticks candles inside pumpkins are a much safer option, plus it creates a far more eerie look for the pumpkins. However, they do not glow as much so it can be difficulty to see the pumpkin lighting up in a dark place.

Although remembering the undead is one of significant things about Halloween, we surely do not want to stare Death in the face. That is why it is important to remember to how to handle pumpkins and candles safely. Using natural candles or natural wax candles with caution will guarantee that the children and the house are safe from any untoward accidents the might arise. Fire provides a good illumination in a dark place, but it also has the potential to become the most dangerous thing to light up.
